While the definition of theft may be simple, the consequences are complex. At Ramsell & Kunowski, L.L.C., we make it our mission to understand the ins and outs of theft and shoplifting laws in order to best advise our clients on a defense strategy. If you have been arrested and charged with theft, we will analyze the details of your case to get to the real story. Everyone makes mistakes – even merchants.
We want you to understand that an arrest does not equal guilt. Our attorneys will carefully consider all facts and stand by you every step of the way. If you made a mistake, there is no need for it to follow you for the rest of your life.
Understanding Penalties for Theft and Shoplifting
At our firm, we believe in educating and representing our clients fully.
In Illinois, the laws regarding theft and shoplifting are subject to change. Our attorneys stay current on these changes so that we can best represent you. Theft and shoplifting are property crimes and the penalties are determined by the value of the alleged theft and the location where the theft occurred.
For example, if a person steals property under $500 from another individual, it is considered a Class 3 felony and carries a possible sentence of two to five years in jail. If the same crime occurred at a school, government facility of place of worship, it is considered a Class 2 felony and carries harsher consequences. Shoplifting merchandise in a store with a value of $300 or less is a misdemeanor, but if the value of the stolen goods is greater than $300, it becomes a felony.
